The metamorphosis of the first grade scientist!
First grade is going to have a very busy year. Even though students will only visit KIDLAB in the spring, classroom teachers will lead them in a fall exploration of the weather. Students will learn how to measure and record the daily weather and look for weather patterns. They will master these skills throughout the year in their regular classroom, and use different weather tools to track the weather.
When science and KIDLAB really get going in the spring, the first grade will start with a unit on chemistry, learning the differences between solids, liquids, and gases. Through exploration, art and play, students will learn how solids, liquids, and gases behave and relate this new information to what they learned about weather (wind, rain, snow, ect).
First grade will finish off the year with an in depth study on butterflies, during which they will watch the metamorphosis from caterpillar to butterfly in a classroom terrarium. In KIDLAB we will make models of the different butterfly stages, use microscopes to look at butterfly parts, and create artwork based on butterfly symmetry.
