Second grade creates their own species!
During our unit on living things we discussed what it means to be an organism. All organisms, whether plant or animal, need food, air, water and shelter in order to survive. A place where an organism can get all of their needs met is called its habitat. In KIDLAB, students were challenged to create a new species of animal. This animal could be completely imaginary or could be a combination of already existing animals. Students needed to think about animal adaptations such as special shape, types of appendages and camouflage when designing their organism. Students were then asked to create a habitat for their new species, keeping in mind all of its basic needs. All of their great ideas were put on paper using paint, marker, colored pencil, Sharpie and crayon.
