Fall exploration
During October andNovember, the K2 investigated fall both in KIDLAB and in their classrooms. Fall (also known as Autumn) is a very popular season in New England. As the Earth's axis tilts away from the sun and the days start to get short, the temperature begins to cool and lets us know that winter is approaching. Animals and plants look for the drop in temperature as an indication that it is time to get ready for the long, cold New England winter and so they start their "seasonal behavior". The K2 looked specifically at what trees do in the fall. We began with basic tree anatomy, identifying tree roots, trunks, branches, and crown of leaves. We discussed that green leaves (seen on the trees in the spring and summer) are green because they are making the food to help the tree survive. When the temperature drops and the tree gets ready for its winter sleep, it no longer needs to make food and stops making the green pigment (called chlorophyll) for the leaves, allowing them to turn colors and eventually fall off. We ended our unit on fall by making decorations for the K1/K2 harvest festival. Take a look at all of our hard work!
