Second Grade
Second grade was incredibly busy this year in science! We started off the year learning about living, non-living, and once living things as an introduction to the larger habitat unit. During the habitat unit, students looked at micro and macro environments to study animal needs and wants. We made terrariums with school yard organisms and did a search around the school to see if NHCS was a complete or incomplete habitat. Students chose habitats from around the world and researched, wrote books, created dioramas and made posters to display all of their knowledge. We then took everything we learned about habitats and created our own indoor habitat for a group of tadpoles and fish to keep in our classroom.
The other major unit of study was on motion and balance. We looked at how different types of objects move (cars, balls, parachutes, planes) and recorded our observations in words and pictures.
