Ms. Olmsted's favorite day is a sunny day!
First grade is off and running with their first science unit; weather! In their classroom, the students observe and record the daily weather, looking for patterns and trends. In KIDLAB, we dive into the "why" of the weather; Why does it get hot? Why does the sun shine? Why do we have night and day?
First grade explored the motion of the earth around the sun, discovering that the earth both rotates around the sun and spins around itself. We watched videos about why the sun is important and why we would never be able to live on the sun. We discovered that the sun gives us light but it also gives us heat and that without the sun, we wouldn't be able to survive!
We also talked about what kinds of colors we should use to represent the sun. We discussed the differences between warm and cool colors and then the students created their own representations of the sun using different craft materials. Check out our work!
