Scientist, Singer, Paper Mache-er Extraordinare
A native of Massachusetts, Ms. O grew up in Middleton, Ma with her mom, dad, sister and brother. She attended Masconomet Regional High School in Topsfield, Ma where she excelled in the classroom and on the stage. Winner of the 8th grade science fair for a project on "handedness", Olmsted knew she wanted to teach science after taking a trip to Costa Rica with her 10th grade science teacher, Tammy Due.
In 2004, Olmsted graduated from Colby College with a B.A. in Art and a minor in Italian Studies. While at Colby, she was a member of the Megalomaniacs (a co-ed a cappella group), Broadway Musical Review (dinner theater) and Colby Dancers. She spent the fall of 2003 studying in Rome, Italy with Temple University.
Anne started teaching KIDLAB at NHCS in 2006 and hasn't looked back since. She has worked with classroom teachers at NHCS to develop a science curriculum that looks at the whole child and focuses on excitement and engagement rather than tests and results. In 2007, her proposal for a unit entitled "The Commotion about Motion" received a grant from Toshiba. In 2009, Olmsted was named an Unsung Hero by ING. In 2010, she won the Amgen Award for Teaching Science Excellence and was honored by the City of Boston with her own holiday (Anne Olmsted day in Boston was May 7, 2010). She shares the KIDLAB program with educators from around New England by speaking at conferences and giving workshops.
When not teaching at NHCS, Olmsted is active in the Boston theater scene. She has performed with the Footlight Club (Jamaica Plain), Turtlelane Playhouse (Newton), AFD (Arlington), Concord Players (Concord), Nextdoor Theater (Winchester), FUDGE Co. (Wakefield) and Metrostage Co. (Cambridge). Favorite roles include Maureen in RENT, Logainne SwarztandGrubbineire in Spelling Bee, Nehebka in Aida, Puck in a Midsummer Night's Dream, Nancy in Oliver! and Dolores in Lippa's WIld Party. Anne is currently attending Lesley University to get her Masters in Elementary Education with a focus in Creative Arts and Learning.
