It is fall...
During the month of November, the K2 investigated fall both in KIDLAB and in their classrooms. Fall (also known as Autumn) is a very popular season in New England. As the Earth's axis tilts away from the sun and the days start to get short, the temperature begins to cool and lets us know that winter is approaching. Animals and plants look for the drop in temperature as an indication that it is time to get ready for the long, cold New England winter and so they start their "seasonal behavior". The K2 looked specifically at what trees do in the fall. We went for a nature walk outside to look at the trees and collect thier fallen leaves. We discussed that green leaves (seen on the trees in the spring and summer) are green because they are making the food to help the tree survive. When the temperature drops and the tree gets ready for its winter sleep, it no longer needs to make food and stops making the green pigment (called chlorophyll) for the leaves, allowing them to turn colors and eventually fall off. With the help of Mr. Lind, K2 made observational drawings of the beautiful fall leaves we collected. We spent our time as we drew, really focusing on every detail we saw (broken edges, veins, holes) just like real scientists do. Take a look at all of our hard work!
