An Exploration of Rocks
During our unit on rocks and minerals, the fifth grade focused on the difference between a property of an object and a property of a material. Sometimes it is important to know the properties of an object, like a shirt's size but for rocks and minerals, we wanted to look at distinct properties of materials in order to compare them. We looked at things that remained constant between samples- magnetism, light, streak, hardness, and luster. Because no two samples looked exactly the same, we did not focus on size, shape, texture or even color (as those can be altered by people by cutting and sanding). We observed 12 different rocks and later went on to describe how each was formed.
